HELLIN HOLY WEEK IS DECLARED OF INTERNATIONAL TOURIST INTEREST, COME AND SEE US.
Hellin Easter is the set of acts performed in the town of Hellin, Albacete (Spain) during Holy Week. It has been declared International Tourist Festival, together with the Holy Week in Cuenca, the only region that has this distinction.
The drum- playing and processions in Hellín form an indivisible whole. They are mostly the same hellineros who participate in both events. If we bear in mind its population (31,000 inhabitants), the existence of twenty-nine Laybrotherhoods with centuries of history behind it draws attention; there are thirty pictures and scultural groups which parade in the procession.
The origins of Easter Hellín go back to the visit of San Vicente Ferrer in 1411, in his tireless preaching against witches and wizards, which led him to travel with the population accompanied by "musicians and singers" who, playing their instruments, especially percussion (drums), set up what the ancient penitential processions were, in which the faithful are whipped and tormented. It lasted until the mid-nineteenth century, organized by the Confraternity of "Nuestra Señora del Rosario" (nowadays patron of the city), float dating from the sixteenth century, being followed at this time by a group of drummers who led the parade, that is why the name of the faithful.
Much Hellín Easter has evolved in these centuries, becoming a benchmark nationally, both for its drums, for its imagery.
EASTER SCULPTURE MUSEUM
In 2010 The Holy Week Museum was finished by the young architects Mario Sanjuán and Ibán Carpintero.
A few peole know about this building, even in Hellín, the town where is located. What is the reason about that? It's simple, the building was never opened. There is not enough money to equip it. The interior building needs furniture, lights, showcases... and of course... sculpture! In this moment the spaces are completely empty.
The building is in an old facade of House of the Duke (XVIII Century) although the construction is completely comtemporany.
Minimal lines, big concrete spaces and different wood levels compose the architetural design.
